Waking up with a sore jaw, worn or sensitive teeth, or a dull morning headache? You may be grinding or clenching in your sleep — and the right night guard can stop the damage. At the San Francisco Center for TMJ & Sleep Apnea, Dr. Amin Samadian, DDS, designs precision-fit night guards that protect your teeth and calm the jaw, built around your bite by a TMJ specialist. Call 415-570-2841 to book at our 450 Sutter St office.

What a night guard does (and why custom matters)

A night guard — also called an occlusal splint or bite guard — is a thin, custom appliance you wear while you sleep. It cushions the teeth against grinding (bruxism) and, just as importantly, repositions and unloads the jaw muscles and joint so they can rest.

A drugstore "boil-and-bite" guard can't do that. Because it isn't fitted to your bite, it's bulky, falls out, and can even shift your teeth or worsen clenching over time. A custom guard is matched to your exact bite — comfortable enough to wear every night, and designed to actually relieve strain rather than just pad the teeth.

Signs you may need a night guard

  • Sore, tired, or tight jaw muscles in the morning
  • Worn, flattened, chipped, or newly sensitive teeth
  • Frequent morning headaches or tension at the temples
  • A partner who hears grinding at night
  • Clicking, popping, or a jaw that feels strained — possible TMJ disorder

Night guards, teeth grinding & TMJ are connected

Grinding and clenching overload the jaw joint and muscles — a common driver of TMJ pain. That's why a guard designed by a TMJ-focused dentist does more than protect enamel: it's shaped to balance your bite and relieve the joint. If your grinding is tied to jaw pain, headaches, or a clicking jaw, the guard is one part of a fuller TMJ treatment plan rather than a standalone fix. Learn more about teeth grinding (bruxism) →

What to expect

  1. Quick exam & scan — we check your bite, teeth, and jaw, then take a digital scan or impression.
  2. Custom-built guard — your guard is fabricated to your exact bite and ready at a short follow-up visit.
  3. Comfort fitting — a short return visit to adjust the fit and balance your bite so it's easy to wear nightly.

Curious about cost and coverage? Many plans cover a custom guard, and when it's part of TMJ care some of it may be billable to medical insurance. See our financing options.

Why choose a TMJ specialist for your night guard

Dr. Samadian focuses on TMJ disorders, dental sleep medicine, and bite reconstruction, and trained at the University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry. That means your guard is designed with your jaw joint, muscles, and bite considered together — not a one-size cushion. Meet our TMJ specialist →
